What is a URL? | URL Full Form | Important Parts of URL

If you are an internet user, then you must have used the URL very often to open any website or search for anything, but you will hardly have any information about it, so today we will provide it through this post. URL is an address to access any website, and it can be accessed only through web browsers like – Google Chrome, UC Browser, Internet Explorer, etc.

If you want to reach any website, then you must know the URL of that website, it is like the home address of any website, just as we cannot access anyone’s home without an address, just like that a website cannot be accessed without the URL. But if you just enter http://inquisitivetocontent.com/, then you will reach the homepage of Full Forms – Info.

The full form of the URL is Uniform Resources Locator. The URL was created by Tim Berners-Lee in 1994. URL is case-sensitive, which means we have to take care of the lower case and upper case. This is the standard way to provide the address of any resource on the Internet.

Important parts of URL -

1) Protocol -

The easiest part of this address is the first part. You might have seen http: // and https: // at the beginning of every URL, but you might not have considered it. However, this element is the ‘protocol’ of the URL.

Protocol tells your browser how to communicate with the server of any website, to send and receive information. Traditionally, most sites have used Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), and you can still see this version across the web.

However, Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) has been widely adopted by many sites. While this protocol works in the same way as HTTP, it is a much more secure option that encrypts data sent between the browser and the server. This is why most browsers give it a green security padlock.

Separator – These are special signs that work to separate different parts of the URL from each other. For example “//” is used to separate https from the rest of the URLs and in other places “/” is used.

The next part that is most recognizable is the ‘domain name’. In this case, it is inquisitivetocontent.com (our website!). A domain name is an identifier for a specific site, which will usually bring you directly to the home page if nothing else is added at the end of it.

A domain name is actually made up of two small parts. The first website name and the subsequent word are known as domain, .com, .org, .net, etc which is at the end of the domain name.

3) Path of the resource –

If you want to go to the front page of our website, all you need is protocol and domain name: http://inquisitivetocontent.com/. But each individual page or file on the website also has its own URL. Look at the previous URL once again.

The latter part of the domain is known as ‘path’. This is because it directs the browser to visit a specific page of the website.

How it works –

Each domain name has a unique IP address that is in numerical form (eg 216.27.61.137). So as soon as we type the URL of a website in our browser then our browser converts that URL to the IP address of that domain name with the help of DNS and reaches the website that we searched.

When you type the domain name in the web browser, the browser finds the IP address of this domain name. Initially, a website was accessed directly from IP address, but it was a difficult method because it was very difficult to remember such a long number, so later the DNS names were created so that we can remember the name of a website easily.
